Beverly S. Krueger

Life Skills in the Kitchen Websites:

  • America's Test Kitchen - Equipment corner
You want to buy the best in kitchen equipment, but the price tag is often way out of your reach. Information on saucepans to whisks will help you decide when to choose an expensive item and when the economy model is just as good. A great resource for the older teen putting together their hope chest or preparing for their first apartment.
  • America's Test Kitchen - Tasting Lab
These pages are a sort of Consumer Reports for food. Which canned tomatoes are best? Bacon, flour, chocolate chips, turkey and twnty-five other food products are tested and compared.
  • 4-H Fantastic Foods Series
The updated Fantastic Foods Series features lots of exciting hands-on activities. Food, fun and flavor are what this curriculum is all about. Youth will have fun in the kitchen as they prepare different foods, do interesting experiments and go on fact-finding missions. The four activity guides are designed around six major categories: health food selection, food safety, smart food purchasing, food preservation, food preparation and careers. In addition to the printed guides, youth can visit the Foods web site where they can download recipes from across the country and around the world. Developed by Purdue University. Grades 3-12.
  • - Nutrition Lesson Plans
List of links to nutrition and health lesson plans.
  • Utah Education Network
    Utah Curriculum Resources
Food and Nutrition I & II and Food and Science (Scroll down)
Links to lesson plans to use in studying food science and nutrition.
Family & Consumer Sciences Home Page
This is the top level link which you can use to explore other resources available to educators in the Utah school systems.
  • Pillsbury: Learn Kitchen Basics
Lots of information, ideas and recipes for learning to cook, bake and preserve food. This site includes a section just for kids, too.
  • The Cook's Thesaurus
The Cook's Thesaurus is a cooking encyclopedia that covers thousands of ingredients and kitchen tools. Entries include pictures, descriptions, synonyms, pronunciations, and suggested substitutions.
  • King Arthur Flour
If you live near Vermont, you'll want to consider attending one of the classes offered at their baking school. They also have a program for kids called Life Skills Bread Baking Program®. If you don't live near Vermont, you'll find many enjoyable recipes and helpful information on their website. They also offer online baking classes.
  • The Vanilla Queen's Vanilla Company
Everything you wanted to know about vanilla and so much more. You could turn this site into your own mini-unit study on vanilla.
  • The Boston Cooking-School Cook Book
Fannie Farmer's original 1918 cookbook. This classic American cooking reference includes 1,849 recipes, including everything from “after-dinner coffee”—which Farmer notes is beneficial for a stomach “overtaxed by a hearty meal”—to “Zigaras à la Russe,” an elegant puff-pastry dish. chose the 1918 edition because it was the last edition of the cookbook authored completely by Farmer.
  • How long can a germ live in a room? - How Stuff Works
The length of time a germ remains infectious depends mostly on the type of germ it is. A germ can be either a virus or a bacterium, and each virus and bacterium has a different behavior in the environment.
  • In a kitchen oven, what is the difference between the bake setting and the broil setting? - How Stuff Works
Baking and broiling are completely different ways to cook food.

If your email message header sounds like it is spam, it will be deleted. "You Should See This!" or "Have I got something great for you" are examples of subject lines that would be deleted unread. If you use 'EHO' in the subject line it will not be deleted unread. If you have not received an answer to your question, please resend your email. We usually have a delay of 1 to 2 weeks in answering email because of the number of requests we get. Those wishing to request links to our site should read our linking page before writing us.
