Goodies in a Jar
Brownies in a jar, soup in a jar, or other goodies in a jar make great gift ideas. Decorate the jars to add an extra special touch.
What you'll need:
- a canning jar with lid, clean and dry. (select size according to recipe)
- ingredients to add to the jar
- 6-inch diameter fabric circle per jar
- card stock, paper, or small note cards
- ribbon or rick-rack
- glue
- hole punch
Follow recipe instructions for adding ingredients to your jar. Place inner lid on jar. Cover with your fabric circle. Screw on outer lid over fabric circle to hold it in place. Print recipe instructions on card stock, paper or small note card. Use a hole punch to punch a hole in the corner of the instruction card. Cut ribbon to tie around jar lid. Thread recipe card onto ribbon through the hole in the card. Tie ribbon around jar and glue in place.
Potato Soup In A Jar
1 3/4 cups instant mashed potatoes
1 1/2 cups dry milk
2 tablespoons instant chicken bullion
2 teaspoons dried minced onion
1 teaspoon dried parsley
1/4 teaspoon ground white pepper
1/4 teaspoon dried thyme
1/8 teaspoon turmeric
1 1/2 teaspoons seasoning salt
Combine all ingredients and mix. Place in 1 quart canning jars to store.
Instructions to attach to jar:
To serve: Place 1/2 cup mix in soup bowl and add 1 cup boiling water. Stir until smooth.
This recipe makes enough soup mix for six servings.
Palouse Soup Mix In A Jar
2 1/2 cups green split peas (1 pound)
2 1/2 cups lentils (1 pound)
2 1/2 cups pearl barley (1 pound)
2 cups alphabet macaroni (8 ounce pkg.)
1 cup dried onion flakes (2 3/8 ounce pkgs.)
1/2 cup celery flakes (1 3/8 ounce pkg.)
1/2 cup parsley flakes (1 1/4 ounce pkg.)
1/2 teaspoon salt
Optional:
1 1/2 teaspoon thyme
1 1/2 teaspoon white pepper
Mix all ingredients together. Store in a jar with a tight- fitting lid. Makes 10 cups of mix.
Instructions to Attach to Jar
Combine 1 cup of soup mix with 4 cup of water or seasoned stock in large pan. Add 1 pound of diced stew meat or ground beef, if desired. Bring to a boil. Reduce heat to low, cover pan and simmer gently for 45 to 60 minutes, or until peas are tender.
Herbed Rice in a Jar
1 package ( 3 ponds ) long grain rice
2 cups dried celery flakes
2/3 cup dried minced onion
1/2 cup dried parsley flakes
2 tablespoons dried chives
1 tablespoon dried tarragon
3 to 4 teaspoons salt
2 teaspoons pepper.
Combine ingredients mixing well. Place in jar. Makes 10 cups of mix.
Instructions to Attach to Jar
You will need: Herbed Rice in a jar, 2/3 cup water, 1 tablespoon butter.
To prepare one serving of rice: In a sauce pan over medium heat, bring water and butter to a boil. Add 1/4 cup rice mixture. Reduce heat; cover and simmer for 20 minutes. Remove from heat; let stand for 5 minutes or until liquid is absorbed. Fluff with a fork. To prepare more than one serving, multiply the rice mix, water. and butter by the total number or desired servings and cook as directed.
Brownies in a Jar
1 1/4 cups all-purpose flour
1 teaspoon baking powder
1 teaspoon salt
2/3 cup unsweetened cocoa powder
2 1/4 cups white sugar
1/2 cup chopped pecans
Mix together flour, baking powder, and salt in a quart jar. Layer remaining ingredients in the order listed. Press each layer firmly in place before adding the next layer. If cocoa coats the jar after it has been added, wipe inside of jar, so the remaining ingredients will show through the glass. Makes one quart jar recipe.
Instructions to Attach to Jar
Additional ingredients you will need: 3/4 cup butter, 4 eggs, flour and shortening for pan prep.
Preheat the oven to 350 degrees F. Grease and flour a 9x13inch baking pan. Empty jar of brownie mix into a large mixing bowl, and stir to blend. Mix in 3/4 cup melted butter and 4 eggs. Mix thoroughly. Spread batter evenly into prepared baking pan. Bake for 25 to 30 minutes in preheated oven. Cool completely in pan before cutting.
Chocolate Chip Cookie Mix
1/2 Cup sugar
1/2 Cup chopped nuts
1 Cup chocolate chips
1 Cup packed brown sugar
2 1/2 Cups flour mixed with
1 Teaspoon baking soda and
1/4 Teaspoon salt
Layer ingredients in jar in order given. Press each layer firmly in place before adding next ingredient. Makes one quart jar batch.
Instructions to Attach to Jar:
Additional ingredients you will need: 3/4 cup butter, 1 egg, 1 tsp. vanilla, shortening for greasing cookie sheet.
Empty cookie mix in large mixing bowl; stir to combine. Add 3/4 cup softened butter, 1 egg slightly beaten and 1 tsp. vanilla; mix until completely blended. Roll heaping tablespoonfuls into balls. Place 2 inches apart on a lightly greased cookie sheet. Bake at 350Âș for 13 to 15 minutes. Cool 10 minutes on baking sheet. Remove to wire racks to cool completely. These cookies will firm up when completely cooled. Yield: 3 dozen.
