Fun
Fall Candle Rings
Beth Waltman
Does the
fall foliage call you and your kids outdoors? Is there a country
lane close by abundantly colorful with leaves, weeds, seeds,
and nuts? Then you may have materials at hand to create a candle
ring. Even in my suburban neighborhood, we found enough interesting
dried seeds and pinecones to complete our project.
You will need:
 |
margerine
tub lids with center cut out, leaving 1" ring |
 |
large,
fat colored candles to fit in the middle |
 |
Spanish
moss |
 |
"found"
items such as pine cones, acorns, seed pods, twigs |
 |
bagged
potpourri |
 |
dried
or silk flowers if desired |
 |
hot
glue gun or white craft glue |
 |
raffia
for bows, if desired |
Younger
children develop small muscle skills by arranging and attaching
their "finds." Be sure to supervise closely if you're using
hot glue. Show your students how to arrange the Spanish
moss so that no plastic shows through.
Then, arrange
larger items around the ring. This is a good time to ask whether
they want their wreath to be symmetrical, with an even amount
of decoration all the way around, or asymmetrical. Talk about
the color wheel. If the wreath is uniform in color, it
is monochromatic. Contrasting colors can be used to create another
look. Yellow leaves enhance purple lavender, for example.
Using potpourri in the wreaths will delight the nose as well
as the eyes. Many packages of potpourri include dried leaves,
blossoms, mushrooms, and seed pods. Kitchen spices such as cinnamon
sticks, and bay leaves and dried peppers add a domestic dimension
to the composition.
Finally,
match a colored candle to each wreath. Glue on raffia bows,
if desired. Candle rings make excellent, inexpensive gifts for
special people in your child's life. They also add country charm
to a holiday table, fireplace mantle, or kitchen. |
