Blessed is the Man: A Curriculum for Godly Young Men

Publisher: All-Around Education
Author: Lynda Coats

List Price: $65.95

Ages: 15-18 Years

From the author of Far Above Rubies comes Blessed is the Man, a two-inch wide, three-ring binder filled with four years' worth of learning adventures for high school-aged young men (though 10 and 11 year olds who have a good grasp on the language arts could use it as well, stretching it into a 5 or 6 year curriculum). Lynda Coats bases these hundreds of pages on Psalm 1, helping you to train your young men for their work in the world. The material is written to the students, and does not treat them like children. It can be used in and of itself, or as accompaniment to other curriculum. Blessed is the Man also coordinates with some of the activities in Far Above Rubies, Coats' curriculum for girls, and includes suggestions for supplemental material, even indicating when activities might include your younger children.

The curriculum covers Bible and Christian Character; Cultural Studies, including economics, government, geography, and history; Reading and Literature; Composition; Mathematics and Personal Finance; Science, including biology, physical, and earth sciences; Health and Physical Fitness, including first aid and safety issues; Practical Arts, including foreign language and woodworking; and Creative and Performing Arts, including music, art, and drama.

Coats also tackles the more "grown-up" subjects that face your maturing son, including church government, use of alcohol, the New Age Movement, the occult, evolution, and abortion - and she stresses a biblical worldview. The nine units break up into smaller, mini-units that include activities for all learning types: write music, memory work, use reference materials, draw and design, watch videos, go water skiing, make a timeline, mapmaking skills, interviewing, and much reading and discussion. Your son will study everything from NASA to the Roman Empire, Teflon to time-delayed locks, the Olympics to the Holocaust, slavery to providing first aid. He'll read primary sources and not just abridged, revised versions of politically corrected mumbo-jumbo.

The curriculum is quite helpful in that it gives lists of essential materials and helpful materials as well as helping with record keeping; activity and credit codes assist in the creation of an accurate high school transcript. Coats also includes a high school report card. These parental help pages are reproducible. I also appreciate Coats' statement to your son: "You will need to help your parents find a way to purchase them (the extra resources) or borrow from someone." This curriculum is a shared responsibility.
