It's just like the Maxwells to find an untaught area within Christian families, and specifically homeschooling, and dive right into it. Case in point: Steven Maxwell's 2001 book Preparing Sons to Provide for a Single-Income Family, published by their family business, Communication Concepts, Inc. Maxwell tackles the oft-times daunting subject concerning parents and their sons in a 192-page softcover, divided into 12 chapters titled, for example, "What is His Earning Potential?," "What is His REAL Earning Potential?," "How Sure a Foundation?," and "Will He Be Prepared?." You'll also find four carefully direct chapters, broken down by age groups. As Maxwell encourages in the opening pages, do NOT wait until your son is a senior in high school to begin preparing him to provide for a single-income family; begin now. Begin by watching what appetites you allow him to develop. Begin by leading him to the Lord as soon as he's ready. Begin on your knees.

This book easily could be used as a Bible study for parents, as well as one-on-one with sons. Think through - no, PRAY through the book as you evaluate your son's abilities and vocations in light of what God's opinion is on "the way (he) should go." Maxwell's direct-to-your-heart, conversational approach is not threatening or condemning; he speaks from experience and gets the message across with Scripture, anecdotes of real life, and well-spoken quotes from historical figures on work and life. I highly recommend the book; it is quite sobering.
