The 181-page hardcover Dear Millie: Answers to Questions Girls Ask is a valuable resource for girls and their parents. In this question-and-answer book, Martha Finley’s 19th century fiction character Millie Keith “responds” with Biblical answers to the questions that today's girls have sent in to the "Talk With Millie" section of the A LIFE OF FAITH web site.

I did not detect any duplication between this book and a similar Mission City Press title, Dear Elsie: Answers to Questions Girls Ask. “Millie” deals with 98 issues in this volume including hard-hitting topics like “Losing Best Friends,” “Preoccupied With Appearances,” “Entering Public School,” “Living Overseas,” “Rebellious Thoughts,” “Watching Bad TV,” “Reckoning With Women’s Rights,” “Dabbling in Witchcraft,” and “Literature and Witchcraft.” As in the Elsie book, Dear Millie points its readers to the Word of God for answers, encourages respect and obedience towards parents and those in authority, and stresses personal accountability.

Here are some examples of the advice given in the book:
  • on witchcraft and literature: “Let me start by saying that witchcraft and Satan are very real. The powers of wickedness in the spiritual realm are as real as the power of God and His angels...Be wise and aware that witchcraft is not some fantasy or fable!...The responsibility of the choice is yours;”
  • on dating: “This issue of dating is something each family will have to consider carefully. You must spend plenty of time asking the Lord and talking with your parents and spiritual leaders...you must protect yourself emotionally... The most important relationship you must nurture is your relationship with the Lord...;”
  • on wrestling with sin: “You will soar with joy, peace, and a strong sense of destiny when you turn your heart back to the Lord. When sin begins to rule our actions, we feel separated from God, confused, frustrated, and frightened, just as you are feeling now...be honest with your parents...re-commit your heart back to Jesus... Do not delay.

The Dear Millie book is one of a large set of titles, including the fiction series, a diary, Bible study, and a book on creative ways to pray. Mission City Press has even “birthed” Elsie and Millie dolls. You can find out more at www.alifeoffaith.com, where you can also join the online girls’ club.
