Buildings in Disguise: Architecture That Looks Like Animals, Food, and Other Things

Printer Friendly Version

Publisher: Boyds Mills Press
Author: Joan Marie Arbogast

List Price: $16.95

Ages: 6-8 Years

Reviewed By: Larissa McKay

Is it a children's book? Well. . .sort of. . .I'm pretty sure. It contains tons of pictures and photos that will delight children of all ages. Its explanations, though they can get lengthy and perhaps a bit technical, are also accompanied by references children can relate to, like "as deep as 2 small bedrooms placed side by side." Best of all, it covers a topic guaranteed to attract attention - mimetic architecture.

"What?" you ask. It's called mimetic architecture and, though this book is definitely written with children in mind, it is the perfect introduction to this often extravagant type of architecture, where a building is specifically designed to mimic something else. So though you could call it a children's book it is definitely not your ordinary children's book. Adults, too, will be fascinated, maybe even tempted snatch the thing and run to another room so they can have it all to themselves for a while.

If you want a book that's unusual, this is it. If you want a book that will help you introduce architecture, even to teaching vocabulary and constructions techniques, this is it. If you want a book that is flat out fun for everyone. . .you guessed it, this is it.

The staff at EHO try very hard to answer all our mail. We have had many of our responses to email returned as undeliverable. We also delete unread a great deal of spam. If your email message header sounds like it is spam, it will be deleted. "You Should See This!" or "Have I got something great for you" are examples of subject lines that would be deleted unread. If you use 'EHO' in the subject line it will not be deleted unread. If you have not received an answer to your question, please resend your email. We usually have a delay of 1 to 2 weeks in answering email because of the number of requests we get. Those wishing to request links to our site should read our linking page before writing us.
