I never cease to be amazed by the topics Amanda Bennett finds for her studies. This one is exceptional-a study most might never think of on their own, but one almost guaranteed to interest our athletically-minded boys and girls.

Bennett began with a 1914 copy of a book entitled Athletes of the Bible. But this book was only her starting place. As she says, "I have rewritten the 1914 edition of this book, including more modern language, adding some material and illustrations, learning links for Internet study as well as scripture references at the end of each chapter."

There are fourteen sections in the six chapters, and the author recommends taking twenty minutes to study each.

This ebook starts in the usual manner, with Bennett's introduction, a list of recommended reading (There are some excellent suggestions on this list!), the introduction from the 1914 edition, and the foreword from the 1914 edition. I always suggest reading such front matter. I especially advise reading this foreword.

Athletes of the Bible teaches young readers about...

David: The Stone Thrower (who exhibits control)
Elijah: The Long Distance Runner (Endurance)
Samson: The Weight Lifter (Strength)
Peter: The Oarsman (Leadership)
Paul: The Swimmer and Sailor (Pluck)
Jesus: The Perfectly Balanced Personality (Balance)

Each chapter begins with the lesson intro page, which offers the title and an appropriate illustration, the study subject and a definition of the subject, a scripture reference, and an appropriate quote. Chapters are broken down into sections.

The sections in David's chapter are "The Athlete," "Training," "The Event" (in this case, his encounter with Goliath), "Internet Learning Links about David," and "Scripture References." These Scripture references are taken from the King James Version of the Bible; the author suggests that your favorite translation might be an excellent supplement.

In looking at "The Athlete," you see that this section gives an excellent picture of who and what David was. It points out those things that are sure to capture a child's attention, like the fact that, "David must have been a man of large and powerful physique." It also offers potential surprises, such as the fact that this athlete was also a poet and musician, and points out that it takes more than muscle to produce a man who will win the victories David sees throughout his life.

This book causes the reader, especially the younger reader, to look at these Biblical characters in new ways. It opens one's eyes to details and facts that easily slip by as we read through our Bibles. The discussion questions, which could be answered on paper or in a group setting, make the student truly think about these details, and hopefully lead him or her to honest self-reflection and a determination to become all that they, the young students, can be.

Yes, Amanda Bennett has definitely done it again.
