Goal Setting for Students

"Encouraging students to develop an `I'LL MAKE IT HAPPEN' approach to life," trumpets the cover of this slim workbook. Short and to-the-point, speaking directly to the student, the workbook takes everyday examples that young people can relate to and uses these in a series of short lessons. The lessons present the material in a conversational style, and follow it up exercises. Topics covered include brainstorming, planning, setting goals, breaking a project into action steps, and evaluating progress.

While introducing the materials available on the Accent on Success website, including but not limited to Goal Setting for Students, the author presents a "mission statement" of sorts that reads:

As parents and concerned adults it is our responsibility to give [our students] the tools they need to be successful. Those tools include:
1. Giving them strong, positive character traits (determination, honesty, patience, etc.)
2. Teaching them how to set and achieve their goals
3. Helping them take more˙responsibility of their education

I certainly cannot quibble with that!

Though the book is written for a classroom setting (one of the goals discussed is raising the student's grade in a certain class), our family found it practical and applicable for our upper elementary student's use, and indeed, the Accent on Success website addresses home educators directly. Much of the work is self-directed, but the material lends itself to discussion and evokes plenty of praise and encouragement for fledgling goal-setters.

Goal Setting for Students has won three national parenting book awards, and I can certainly see why. Also available: a teacher's manual and student bookmarks that summarize the information in the student's workbook.
