Match `Em: A Fun Numbers Game for Kids and Adults

This is a fun and fast-paced game that combines a little skill, a little strategy, the ability to add number combinations to 14, and a certain amount of luck (as I tried to explain to the tearful child who did not win despite ample mathematical knowledge and skillful strategizing).

Game materials are simple, with a mat that regulates play (a place for everything, and everything in its place), a deck of number cards with values from 1 to 14, and poker chips that are used to count how many "hands" you've won. The first person to get rid of all of their cards (starting with five, but as you keep drawing you can end up with a real handful!) wins the hand; the first player to win three `hands' wins the game.

The first person to play puts down a number, and succeeding players try to match that number with a single card or a sum of cards, having to draw extra cards if they can't make a match. Wild cards make the game a little more flexible.

Game materials are sturdy. Our younger ones had a little trouble shuffling the stiff, brand-new cards but we worked it out. (Mom shuffled, children cut the cards and dealt.)

Aimed at age seven and up and suited for two to four players, this is a game that I think we'll use often on our family game nights. And it's nice that the children are brushing up on their basic addition combinations! ("Let's see. Thirteen. Um. Four and four are eight, and two and two and one are five, and that's thirteen! I win!")
