Body Talk is formatted in a comic book style with drawings on each slick page; it proposes solutions to combat negative stereotypes about girls' body images. For instance, it opens with the assertion Dare To Be You, which tells the reader she needs to be okay with herself.

Beauty Then and Now shows fashion from Ancient Egypt, Aztec Culture, and the European Baroque Period, and features an evolutionary fashion show: 1800, 1860, 1890, 1895, 1907, 1920, 1930, 1950, 1966, 1974, 1982, 1985, 1990, and 2000.

Twenty-first-century trends toward Cosmetic Surgery are outlined in a section entitled Playing with Knives.

Eating Disorders are identified; unfortunately, solutions are over simplified. For example, if you are overweight, you need to eat right and get exercise. If it were that easy, America would not have an obesity problem. However, the truism may be a good place to start if the teacher, leader or parent is ready to continue the discussion in depth.

This book may be helpful to open discussions in health or gym class about body image with a group of pre-adolescent girls. However, the issues raised in this book are serious and would need some additional informational resources to answer the obvious questions adequately. Why do some girls have a skewed body image? How do you help a girl with eating disorders? How can a girl overcome these issues and get to a healthy place?

I asked a 13-year-old girl to read the book and to tell what she thought of it. She said she thought it was written for younger girls as an introduction to health issues.

The staff at EHO try very hard to answer all our mail. We have had many of our responses to email returned as undeliverable. We also delete unread a great deal of spam. If your email message header sounds like it is spam, it will be deleted. "You Should See This!" or "Have I got something great for you" are examples of subject lines that would be deleted unread. If you use 'EHO' in the subject line it will not be deleted unread. If you have not received an answer to your question, please resend your email. We usually have a delay of 1 to 2 weeks in answering email because of the number of requests we get. Those wishing to request links to our site should read our linking page before writing us.
