If you've been homeschooling any length of time and have considered teaching Latin, I'm sure you've heard of the award-winning Latina Christiana program. It was the first Latin curriculum I considered, when our oldest student and I were just getting our feet wet.

While I had never learned Latin in school, myself, I'd been convinced of its usefulness in laying a foundation for learning modern Romance languages and as a foundation for learning to use English effectively through the intricacies of grammar and usage, not to mention vocabulary and an understanding of roots. Do I even need to mention Latin's prominence in the fields of Law and Science?

I was lost, looking for a user-friendly Latin program amongst the choices, when some friends steered me towards Latina Christiana. The first plus for this non-Latin mom was the CD with its pronunciation guide! The next thing that struck me were the short, straightforward lessons, introducing about ten new words per lesson, with work in translation, grammar, and connecting English derivatives with basic Latin words. I liked the periodic review, with a review lesson after every fifth lesson, and the practical approach.

Twenty-five lessons plus five review lessons take you through a year's course at the rate of one lesson a week. In the Latina Christiana Student Book you'll also find two maps (Ancient Italy, Roman Empire), history questions covering material from Chapters 1-13 of Famous Men of Rome (please see related review), the Lord's Prayer and a table blessing in English and Latin with pronunciation guides, music for three Latin songs (Adeste Fideles, Dona Nobis Pacem, and Christus Vincit), and appendices with helpful charts and comprehensive vocabulary index.

A funny bit of personal anecdote: Our eldest was dubious about studying Latin until we noticed that the song Dona Nobis Pacem was included in Latina Christiana I. That little bit of familiarity - for it's one of our favorite rounds - was enough of a psychological boost to help us plunge into our studies with enthusiasm.

I'd recommend using this consumable Student Book in conjunction with the Teacher Manual and Pronunciation CD (please see related reviews), especially if your own Latin is lacking or rusty.

Latina Christiana I is an excellent introduction to Latin for the Christian student. Highly recommended.
