Homeschooling and drama meet in this homeschool production of the story of Thomas Gallaudet, founder of the American School for the Deaf. The play follows Gallaudet’s life from a young sickly boy who didn’t know what he might be able to do when he grew up to the now famous deaf educator. His story is told by the Homeschool Dramatic Society with a cast of 46 homeschool children and graduates and their families in stage support positions. Colorful costuming and delightful singing from the chorus make this stage production an easy classic.

The story chronicles Gallaudet’s life. He met Alice Cogwell, a young deaf girl, who inspired him to his calling of serving the deaf. Having determined God’s call on his life, Gallaudet set about founding a school for the deaf that taught reading and writing along with the saving grace of Jesus Christ. In classroom scenes the audience learns some basic signs as the character Thomas begins by teaching the alphabet. There are many repetitive lessons of American Sign Language throughout the play so an attentive viewer can pick up quite a bit of sign before the video is over.

One of the most moving moments is when the class signs the song “Amazing Grace.” There are opportunities to learn about the attitudes of the general public toward the handicapped during the 1800s as well as a look at popular games, songs, and dances, which are all woven into the story. The play ends with Gallaudet marrying one of his students and continuing to work with the deaf school."

This DVD is a great way to see what a homeschool community can create. It may inspire your homeschool group to attempt their own dramatic productions. The DVD also serves as a wonderful practice tool for young children learning to sit through a play, bu doing so at home before they attempt to do so in public.

Sign of Love is enchanting and a must have for any homeschool home DVD collection.
