The God We Praise is a prayerful study of God's character that can be used any time of year, but is especially suited to the time we celebrate Thanksgiving. This twenty-one day devotional is written in simple language, teaching about the God of the Bible. The text is conversational in tone, presenting a facet of God's character in a straightforward manner, using illustrations from God's Word and relating the lessons to our own lives.

For each day, the author introduces a characteristic of “the God who...” (is holy, sees, never forgets, leads and cares, is righteous, etc.), explaining and giving examples from scripture. Next follows something to think about—a way to apply your knowledge. Next comes a short prayer, and then...

Here's the part that made me smile, when I unpacked the kit that came with the book. You see, the kit includes a spiral-bound little book with an illustrated page for each day. There's also a packet of colorful stickers, and a gold pen. Each day, you read the devotion, pray, and then work on that page in the book, which illustrates the concept. For example, when learning about how we cannot fool God or hide our deeds from him, you'll get out the gold sticker from the sticker assortment and try to hide it under the drawing of a tent in the activity book. You'll find that you can't hide it! Reading about God saving His people, the Israelites from the Egyptian army, you'll color the picture of the Red Sea parting to let His people walk across on dry land, and then fix a little fish sticker onto the page. When you've gone through all twenty-one days, you'll have a little book to help you remember what you've learned.

The basic package comes with the devotional guide and one kit. You can go through the devotional together as a family, with the children taking turns decorating pages, or you may want to buy additional kits so that each child can have a book.

Every lesson is rounded out with a handful of suggestions for activities: further reading, acting out scenes from Bible stories, games, crafts, singing, and object lessons. Each is designed to encourage further thought about our wonderful and awesome God, as well as to spur us in remembering to praise Him for Who He is and what He has done.

The God We Praise and other devotionals by the author are superb tools for helping your children to get to know more about God and cultivate a thankful heart. Just think what a habit you'll be encouraging with twenty-one straight days of thanks!

I'm very impressed with The God We Praise. If you're looking for a devotional for Thanksgiving or any time of year, you'll find it here.
