Lyrical Learning has done a great job in turning something most students are resistant to wanting to learn and making it an enjoyable experience. It starts with the introduction to the human body such as cells, tissues, organs, and going through each system up to the "Ologies" meaning branches of medical science.

The text for Lyrical Life Science: Volume 3 has 93 pages including the index. The text has the musical scores to all 13 songs on the included CD as well as the lyrics. The text is well outlined and even gives a breakdown of all the scientific illustrations that grace the pages of the text. The illustrations are well done, and while in black and white, do an excellent job of explaining aspects of the science that could be lost to the student and helping the teacher to explain the subject area. There is a lot of information contained within these pages of text, but it is written in such a way to make sense and not over burden the student with un-needed information.

I will admit I worry at times about the quality or composing of music that accompanies some self-published curriculums, but this one definitely put any worries to rest in a timely manner. The music is lively and uses well-known tunes. For example, Introduction to the Human Body is sung to the tune of “The Rebel Soldier” and The Immune and Lymph System is sung to the tune of “La Cucaracha.” There are 13 songs included on this CD and included in the insert are all the lyrics along with the tunes they should be sung to. Bobby Horton, who has done music scores for ten PBS films, including The Civil War and Baseball, does the recording. The lyrics and music make for an enjoyable learning experience, especially for a family that may have an auditory learner. My 4-year-old really enjoys the music and can even sing along, so the CD has become a good learning tool.

The workbook is also a very well done. There are more scientific illustrations, which are shown in the text as well, so the student is already familiar with them. There is plenty of writing space for the student to record their answers, with a section covering the lyrics, objective, short answers questions, and essays there is plenty of opportunity to ensure that the student is actually learning what they are reading or hearing. There is an answer key in the back so that the independent student may check their own work or so that the parent or teacher can ensure understanding of the subject.

Overall, the entire set is well worth the time to teach it and the music CD makes the learning enjoyable without being repetitious and allows for plenty of review.
