The Star-Spangled Workbook is suggested to be used in combination with the Star-Spangled State Book, both published by Bramley Books a division of Knowledge Quest. This is the student manual, which also has a CD-ROM for making extra copies of the workbook pages. The book is a paper bound 8 by 11 inch book with worksheets for each state so that as the student progresses they will record what has been learned about each state as well as included quizzes.
Before beginning the book there is a word to the instructor that gives a basic run down of how to use the book as well as what the student will be able to do after they finish the first semester and second semester. This book allows for four lessons a week, allowing the 5th day to be used as the teacher sees fit, and if the lesson plan is followed, the book allows for a 36-week curriculum in the 264 pages.
There is a United States map at the beginning as well as the 36-week lesson plan lay out. The fourth day of each week is a quiz except for week one, which includes a state lesson along with a quiz. At the bottom of each workbook page, students are told to either progress on or to stop. For the student who works well independently, this will allow them to work on their own. This is also helpful for the student who gets overwhelmed at having a lot of work in front of them, so that they know there is a limit in what is being studied on any particular day.
The workbook pages proceed through the states in alphabetical order, as does the associated book, The Star-Spangled State Book. Two exams are included, one to be given at the end of each of the semesters or at the instructor's discretion. Answer keys for all quizzes are located in the back of the book along with a section on how to grade the quizzes and exams and a student record. There are many pictures and illustrations to keep studying interesting along the way. Although they aren't in color, there are chances for the student to color some of the illustrations if they choose.
At the end of the first semester, the student will have learned and should be able to identify all the states, locate them on maps, and recall some basic state facts. At the end of the second semester, the student will expand what they have already learned by playing games, taking more quizzes, and continuing to study the states. By the end of the year, the student should be able to do all the could after the first semester, recall even more state facts, know the state capitals, and know which states border each other. Very impressive for a 36-week course on the states!
The reproducible CD is attached in the back of the book and can be easily taken in and out for copies. Permission is given for the buyer to make as many copies as needed for their immediate family. This is very helpful if you have several school aged children or younger ones that will use it in a few years. There was no problem getting the CD to start up, and it was easy to use and find what needed to be printed. Everything that is in The Star-Spangled Workbook is included on the CD, so if the book is destroyed the pages can still be accessed. My suggestion is to store the CD in an area away from the book, so that if the book does get destroyed, the CD is safe from damage. |
