The Put-On Chart Kit from Doorposts is a wonderful and interactive way to introduce your children to the character qualities that children of God should “put on” themselves. Based on a study of Colossians 3:12-14, the kit comes with the “Put On” Chart Lesson book, a laminated 8.5” X 11” color “put on” chart and two cardstock copies of a paper doll with clothing for both a girl and a boy. The laminated chart/poster is perfect for hanging on a wall to remind children of the definition for each character quality, Scripture reference for each, and what article of clothing represents the quality.

The character qualities that are discussed are:

  • Humility
  • Love
  • Forgiving
  • Bearing with one another
  • Meekness
  • Patience
  • Compassion
  • Kindness

Each character quality is also given some reminder in the form of a question. For example, for the question for patience is, “Can you be patient with this person and lovingly pray for him? Do it!” The study also provides another Scripture that reiterates that particular quality to go along with the Colossians verse.

The accompanying paper dolls can be colored and cut out to make learning the character qualities more hands-on and fun. The instructions are to cut out, make the slits where noted so that the tabs on the clothes can slip in and stay on. I found that by coloring the doll and clothes, cutting them out, laminating and adding Velcro dots allowed me to hang each child’s on a wall with more durability.

The lesson book is perhaps the most important part of the kit, though, as it really goes into how to implement the Put-On Chart and how to teach the qualities to your children. As each quality is taught, the following modes of learning are utilized: teach the wisdom of Scripture, put into action, sing songs, pray, use the chart to remember, and use the paper dolls. Each section has a few questions about what the boy or girl is wearing, and how it relates to the character quality. Then the lesson discusses what that quality is and what the Bible says about that trait, Bible persons who displayed that quality, how to apply the trait in one's own life, followed by singing the songs and praying.

The easy-to-follow, 36-page book is easy to implement as well as to adapt to your circumstances. You can make the lessons as long or as short as needed, and focus on what your children need: Does one child need to focus on humility while another needs to focus on compassion? It's doable.

There is much to be covered with each trait, and while a week may be good, each could be drawn out for two weeks, depending on how in-depth the trait needs to be covered. Also of note is the fact that the family who purchases the kit may make copies for their own family as long as they aren’t re-sold; this will help out large families to include all the children.

The Put-On Chart from Doorposts is a wonderful way to instill Christian character qualities in life of children.
