I Can Do All Things DVD

Publisher: How Great Thou Art Publications
Author: Barry Stebbing

List Price: DVD: $49.95

Ages: 9-11 Years

For parents and teachers who are unsure about teaching art to children, Barry Stebbing has a DVD set to supplement his curriculum for ages 6 and up, I Can Do All Things (please see related reviews). The set includes four DVDs covering four areas in the text; Beginning drawing (lessons 1 – 36), colored pencils (lessons 37 – 64), colored markers (lessons 65 – 100), and painting (lessons 101 – 142). The only part (from the text) that is not included in the DVD is the introduction to drawing from A to Z, so the child will still need to work on that section on their own.

Barry Stebbing himelf is on the DVD and he walks you through some of the basics as presented in the text. The lesson intitled "How to Plan Your Art Curriculum" actually walks you through how to create a lesson plan basing it on two lessons per week, including materials, supplies, and helpful hints such as how to store the pencils. In the DVD lessons, Mr. Stebbing works directly in the same book the child is using. The majority of the time he is showing students how to draw in their own books. Music plays quietly in the background as he gives the lessons; for some children it may be distracting, but it can be pleasant. He recommends in the text that Classical music can be inspiring.

His approach is likable and friendly, which helps children to feel like they have their own art teacher at their disposal. When a lesson uses the paint or marker cards, he shows the child how to do the lesson while using the cards himself. Like the other lessons, each one builds on the others, so the child is continuing to use what was learned previously instead of forgetting and moving on. For older students the DVD may seem a bit dated but Barry Stebbing’s approach will capture their attention while they work along with him. It’s easy to follow along with the DVD while working through the book, which makes the DVD a great investment if you want more instruction and encouragement.
