My children and I enjoy doing a unit study every now and then. When I first saw the title of this book I was thrilled to see a unit study dedicated to health and wellness. Not only did it sound appealing, but it came with "worksheets, activities, planning calendars and more!". I was ready to dig into this and teach our children some healthy, life-long eating habits.

When the book arrived, I immediately began to read the outline and flipped through the small packet of worksheets. This was not your typical unit study. In fact, when reading through the book, I discovered that it speaks to an adult audience, not on a level that a K-5th grade child would be able to retain. Chapter Three discusses the FDA, USDA, and EPA along with DDT and genetically engineered foods.

The book does contain recipes that would appeal to a wide variety of tastes; however, you may want your child to skip the recipe entitled, "Mama's PMS Cake".

The worksheets are not as in-depth as the book. In fact, they are quite simple. Chapter One begins by listing foods that represent the categories of fats, proteins, and complex carbohydrates, then it's off to Chapter Two. The worksheets also contain a "Parent Note" for each chapter that runs alongside the questions. I'd prefer the Parent Notes to be on the Parent's Pages that are in the front of the worksheets.

I didn't find this to be a "unit study" at all, much less for the grades specified. I think this would work well with older students and you wouldn't need to purchase the worksheets.
