Come back in time to learn the hearts and hearths of women who raised men we honor. Meet the mothers of Augustine, Abraham Lincoln - his stepmother, too; George Washington, John Quincy Adams, and the like. In writing this book, mid-19th century author Archer Wallace stated he was not attempting to extol a few mothers, "but to pay tribute to the countless number of unselfish, devoted mothers everywhere." Wallace seems to have been inspired by his own mother, who poured stories of great men into her young son.

This is not only a book for children, but for mothers; I wonder that we might see ourselves with our own children in the stories and find something instructive for our own souls. Monica prayed and prayed for her wayward son, Augustine, to come to Christ. Consider Victoria - that is Queen Victoria - who raised her nine children in simplicity, free from snobbishness, and taught them responsibility. And, though a working mother, the Queen laid aside matters of state to deal with her children's sicknesses and matters of discipline. There is also a chapter on Susanna Wesley, who ran an orderly, harmonious, and happy home despite the trial of poverty and debt.

Some of the stories include accounts from the diaries and other writings of the mothers, but many times it's the sons' writings that tell us of their great impact. What a noble and worthy calling these men assign to motherhood! This book is a blessing for the whole family.
