Maximum Math

Printer Friendly Version

Publisher: Design-A-Study
Author: Kathryn Stout

List Price: $24.00

Ages: 12-14 Years

Reviewed By: Anita Barth

Maximum Math is part of the Design a Study series and serves as a well-organized guidebook to mathematical concepts for K through 8th grade. The sections are divided into grade levels.

Each section introduces several topics. The guide emphasizes general reasoning skills by beginning each grade level with a topic entitled, "Problem Solving". Stout makes much effort to encourage an understanding of a concept rather than rote memorization. She highly recommends manipulatives and illustrations to establish concepts in the concrete stage of learning.

Following topics include measurement, statistics, reciprocals, time, volume, ratios, etc. Each topic lists specific skills that should be mastered. While Maximum Math presents concepts in a grade level format, it encourages the user to view math overall, conceptually. Topics may be taught in any order to suit the student's maturity and ability levels. The skills to be mastered are clear and specific.

The guide would be very helpful to someone concerned with gaps in their student's skills. It does not, however, "teach" the concepts, nor does it provide worksheets or assignments to apply the information. Its generous list of sources will help you acquire supportive materials including workbooks, manipulatives and software. An attractively colored, glossy finished paperback, this guide sells for $24.00.

Kathryn Stout is an educator; her natural teaching abilities were recognized before she even left grade school. During her formal schooling she was often called upon to assist classmates, and served as a student aide after school. After graduation she pursued her dream of teaching by earning a diploma with honors from the University of Delaware. She achieved a Bachelor's degree in Elementary Education and a Master's degree in Special Education.

Stout taught in the public school setting for 8 years, specializing in techniques for special needs children. She is a consultant, public speaker, and author of the Design A Study series, which she used as curriculum for her two children for 14 years. Her work with special needs children is reflected in the multi-sensory approach of these studies.

Stout possesses a God-given passion and ability to reach the minds and hearts of children, and she truly equips parents to teach. She often provides help that affects not only special needs children, but also the entire family environment.

Stout offers a free teaching helps column on her web site and is available as a educational consultant.
