Having scrapbooked for over 6 years and homeschooled for over 3, I was excited to finally see a book like this in print and in front of me. Scrapbooking Through United States History: 1920-1939 is a wonderful resource for teachers who want their students to remember what is being taught and have fun at the same time.

There are many textbooks “out there” that give information about United States History. There are many scrapbook guides “out there” that give information about scrapbooking or recording information. This is the first book I have seen that actually combines the two subjects in a fun, easy-to-understand format.

This is an 8 ½”x11” book that is spiral bound and has full color photographs. The book gives both the teacher and student a user-friendly approach to learning about history and creating a scrapbook at the same time.

Each book in the series (this is book #2) covers a 20-year period of history. Each lesson in this book covers two to three years, depending on the number of events. The teacher can decide to teach all 20 years individually or in groups. The teacher can also choose to teach selected years or points of interest. Lessons are divided into five sections:
  • Fast Facts & Inventions
  • Activity Ideas
  • Reproducible Pages
  • Web Sites to Visit
  • Layout Ideas
Each lesson provides information about historical events, activities for students in grades 4-12 (as a general rule) and reproducibles that coincide with the activities in the book. The book also contains sample layouts as well as a creative nudge or two to help the student come up with ideas on how to display the information. The author has even included a section of usable clipart that relates to the time period; you'll find images of 1920’s fashions, national leaders, and maps of the United States, plus much, much more.

I eagerly await the release of future editions in this excellent scrapbooking history series. The only thing I find disappointing is that the suggestions given are for younger grades. I’m sure that if I think about it I can adapt the lessons for older students on my own. That would take work, though, and it would be nice if someone did this for me. Overall, A+ on a superb publication!
