John Perry’s 387-page hardcover Unshakable Faith: Booker T. Washington & George Washington Carver is a work to be treasured. With characteristic attention to thorough documentation and delicious, historical detail, Perry shakes the dust off of these two American treasures – notice I did not say black American treasures – and shows them to be noble, godly men, flawed to be sure, but men worthy of our attention and admiration. Even though I was a history minor in college, Perry introduced me to details of America’s history I had never been taught. How wonderful the legacy is that these two men left behind!

I was touched and challenged and motivated by their perseverance, their humility, their ability to not live their lives “camped” on what was wrong with the world. They, instead, endeavored to quietly, humbly change the world by their own lives’ inspiration.

Curiously, though they had similar ideals, they clashed personally. I thought that sad, but particularly human. Perry does not beatify these men, nor pen a fictionalized novel; he simply presents the men – and does an admirable job. I highly recommend this book, as well as Perry’s Lady of Arlington. Both books are indispensable for the history lover’s bookshelf.
