12 Dogs of Christmas 12 Dogs of Christmas
by Steven Paul Leiva
Now available as a novel based on the screenplay written by Kieth Merrill, this story is destined to become a classic for young readers during the holiday season.

The film centers around 12-year-old Emma O'Connor as she is sent to live with her "aunt" in the small town of Doverville. Emma soon finds herself in the middle of a "dog-fight" with the mayor and town dogcatcher. In order to strike down their "no-dogs" law, Emma must bring together a group of schoolmates, grown-ups, and adorable dogs of all shapes and sizes in a spectacular holiday pageant. The 12 Dogs of Christmas is a fun, heartwarming story, featuring a diverse canine cast and is perfect for all those who love dogs, kids, and Christmas.

The 12 Dogs of Christmas was first introduced as a picture book and board book with companion CD written by then 8-year-old, Emma Kragen. Now with over 500,000 books sold, the story has been expanded into a feature-length film.

This special book bridges the Old Testament and New Testament, showing Jesus' birth as part of God's plan from the very beginning. Interesting "Did You Know?" elements featured throughout the book to give kids fun facts about this Unlikely Royal Family Tree.

Christmas Shoes, The Christmas Shoes, The
Starring: Rob Lowe, Kimberly Williams
Amazon.com
The Christmas Shoes bounces between two families--the Layton household, where father Robert (Rob Lowe, The West Wing) is so consumed with his work that he misses his daughter's recital; and the Andrews home, where mother Maggie (Kimberly Williams, According to Jim) has been diagnosed with a fatal heart ailment. Desperate to make his mother's last moments happy, Maggie's son Nathan struggles to buy a pair of red dancing shoes that seem like a pair Maggie remembers from her childhood. Naturally, the lives of these families become intertwined, particularly when Robert's wife takes over Maggie's choral program--which topples the already troubled balance between Kate and Robert. Perhaps because Rob Lowe is usually stereotyped as glib and insincere, The Christmas Shoes feels surprisingly heartfelt. The earnestness of The Christmas Shoes surprises because the story originated in the famously sappy country song of the same name, and movies based on songs rarely feel anything but plastic and contrived. There are certainly moments when The Christmas Shoes lays on the sentiment woefully thick, but you'd have to be an ogre not to be touched when Maggie and her husband have one last dance. Also featuring Dorian Harewood (Roots: The Next Generations). --Bret Fetzer

Hello Santa! (Board Book) Hello Santa! (Board Book)
by Christina Turner
Hello Santa! is the perfect gift for your baby's first Christmas! This sturdy board book features modern illustrations, meticulously cut out of black and white paper, that depict the story of Santa's journey from the North Pole on Christmas Eve. Current research suggests that interaction with high-contrast images and geometric patterns helps stimulate brain and eyesight development in infants. In this high contrast book, Santa's toy bag whirls around a Christmas tree skirt to form a bull's eye and the whoosh of Santa's sleigh creates wavy stripes. Parents can stand the book in front of their baby to keep his or her interest during tummy time. Because Hello Santa! is a wordless story?not just a group of pictures ? parents have an opportunity to infuse their own traditions into the story and foster creativity in older children. This narrative aspect of the images keeps parents and children interested in the book well beyond the first six months of the baby's life.

The House Without a Christmas Tree
Amazon.com
The loss of a loved one is never easy and memories often make the holiday season especially difficult. Addie (Lisa Lucas) lost her mother when she was very young and, while she sometimes yearns for her mother, she is a happy well-adjusted ten-year old who wants nothing more than to have a Christmas tree in the living room. Addie's father (Jason Robards) absolutely refuses to have a Christmas tree in the house, but offers no explanation for his stubborn resolve which leads Addie to question his motives and his love for her. It falls to Addie's Grandmother (Mildred Natwick) to explain that her father is still immersed in grief over the loss of his wife and that the memories of Christmases past are simply too painful for him to endure. When Addie wins a tree at school, her father is enraged by both the presence of the tree in his home and the idea of his family accepting charity. Only by opening a line of communication and sharing their feelings and memories with one another can Addie and her father reconcile their differences and begin to understand one another. Set in 1964, this 1972 made-for-television special feels like a stage play with sets and scenery that evoke the essence of an age-gone-by. The message, of course, is timeless. (Ages 5 and older) --Tami Horiuchi

Noel Noel
Josh Groban
Amazon.com
The Grammy-nominated, twenty-something, pop-classical phenomenon's fourth studio album is an expertly accomplished entry to the holiday marketplace. Noël tackles the familiar sounds of holiday music with a charmingly eclectic array of guest vocalists and a wide range of material. The songs range from the sacred to the secular, while Groban--buoyed in spots by none other than the London Symphony Orchestra--soars in his duets with Brian McKnight, Faith Hill, and the Mormon Tabernacle Choir. There's even a song with a gospel choir directed by Kirk Franklin. Produced yet again by crossover maestro David Foster, the arrangements never overwhelm the songs. Groban's smooth and supple vocals can be hard to categorize--seeing how his range is somewhere in-between a high baritone and a low tenor--but he always finds and emphasizes the emotional core of these songs. And whether they have origins in pop or classical music seems not to matter. The addition of messages from troops stationed in Iraq on top of "I'll Be Home for Christmas" is undeniably heart-wrenching, while the album's highlight is its most spare song, "It Came Upon a Midnight Clear," which finds Groban alone at his piano, sounding very much like some kind of angel. --Mike McGonigal

Probity Jones and the Fear Not Angel Probity Jones and the Fear Not Angel
by Walter Wangerin (Author), Tim Ladwig (Illustrator)
It was Christmas Eve. Probity’s family was going to church for the Christmas pageant. Probity herself was to be the Fear Not Angel, the best part she ever had in her life. But Probity Jones was sick.

She could hear her family laughing outside as they walked away to church. She gazed through the window at the lonely moon, perfectly round, perfectly white. And she felt miserable.

Knock! Knock! Someone was knocking on their third-floor window. Probity caught her breath. Outside was a beautiful person dressed all in white, bright as the moon, and tall as the night. She opened the window on the tips of her fingers: Come, Probity Jones. It’s time to go.

And so begins a breathtaking flight up to the pathways of the moon, across a sea as deep as dreaming—and down, down to a Christmas pageant beyond imagining. And Probity is there, hovering above strangely familiar shepherds, joining the Fear Not Angel’s great glad tidings. This is a story that will enchant the entire family and bring warmth, joy, and new meaning to every Christmas season.

Saint Nicholas: The Real Story of the Christmas Legend Saint Nicholas: The Real Story of the Christmas Legend
by Julie Stiegemeyer (Author), Chris Ellison (Illustrator)
Many parents and teachers struggle with how to approach the Saint Nicholas/Santa Claus dilemma. Many deal with this by telling children that the legends surrounding Santa Claus are based on a real, historical figure named Nicholas, a Christian bishop known for his generosity.

This picture book presents a shortened, somewhat fictionalized version of the life of Saint Nicholas, explaining that Nicholas was a servant of God and that, through him, God’s love was reflected to others. The story touches on the ministry of Nicholas and his generous gift of a dowry to three young girls as a response to God's love in Jesus. And it brings application to our own lives as we, too, respond with grateful hearts to God’s great gift of love to us.

Combining museum-quality artwork and family friendly language, this book clearly articulates how God showered His love upon us through Christ and helps children see that our own gift-giving is a grateful response to the sacrificial gift of God’s Son.

Sing Glory, Glory! Jesus is Born! Sing Glory, Glory! Jesus is Born!
by Gail Pawlitz (Author), Sehee Jung (Illustrator)
This board book tells the story of Jesus' birth using rhyme and colorful illustrations.

Written so it can be sung to the melody of "Jesus Loves Me," this book recalls that Jesus is our Immanuel—God with us. Each set of pages illustrates a different scene of that first Christmas night — the manger, the shepherds, the angels and more. Truly a complete Christmas story, the last pages remind young readers that Jesus, God's own dear Son, was sent to take the punishment for our sin. Each verse is accompanied by the refrain: "Sing al-le-lu-ia, the Savior has been born."

A glittering cover makes this book endlessly appealing to young ones.

by Martha Jander (Author), Lin Wang (Illustrator)
Through gentle verse and rich illustrations, children hear an accurate portrayal of the Magi, dispelling minunderstandings that put three Wise Men at Jesus' birthplace.
