For sixth-through-eight graders, English Professor Alisa Thomas created a fine study guide to help you navigate the Mississippi River, the gloom and betrayal of the graveyard, and the dirt roads of a small, ordinary Missouri town. Join Tom and his buddy, Huck Finn, as they wrestle with right and wrong, courage and cowardice, and haphazard their way into hero status.

After learning a bit more about Mark Twain, Thomas leads you through the intricacies of Tom's adventures. I really like the inclusion of "Ideas for Pre-reading Activities" in the Progeny Press guides; these really "set the stage" for your literature adventure. Learn about technology, 1840s education and temperance. Cram all those new vocabulary words into your brain. Pick up a dialect, and handle some metaphors with satire and poetic justice on the side. You can "Dig Deeper" into the story by applying Scriptures to the situations Tom stirs up, and seeing how God's Word interprets the happenings. Your scholars can write a funeral sermon, decide if it's ever okay to lie, and see the world through Injun Joe's eyes. To finish up your study - and to increase the difficulty level for more advanced students - select one or more of the essay projects on pages 66-68. Excellent!
