Mark Cleghorn is a professional photographer of 20 years who specializes in creative wedding and portrait photography. He takes you through the basics of photography; from choosing equipment to creative lighting techniques.

Many of the suggestions are very helpful to the beginning photography enthusiast. Being one that dabbles in the art myself, I appreciated the "tips" sections throughout the chapters. The section entitled, "Refining the Pose", has some great photos illustrating the differences in various poses. It's amazing how the slightest move in one direction can change the final outcome of a pose. The portraits of the families and children are very creative! Cleghorn truly has a gift for capturing the moment in such a way that you "ooo and ahh" over the finished product.

Among others, my favorite sections were the Split Lighting effects and the Low-key Lighting effects. I'm looking forward to trying out some of his techniques on my family! (I'm sure they won't be quite as excited as I am.) There are plenty of pictures for the visual learner, but I must point out that some of the pictures, though many may view them as art, can be quite risque'. I'd suggest a thorough look at all of the pages before passing it on to your student.

This would be a great resource for anyone wanting to try their hand at photography, whether they're a student or not. If you're a mom/dad that enjoys taking pictures of your children, there are plenty of creative ideas to work with.
