This bright and cheerful little book starts off with a bounce as six-year-old Kandoo Kangaroo springs onto the page with quick questions coming in such rapid succession that her mother can't slip the answers in edgewise. (Hmmm. Sounds very much like a bright, energetic, inquisitive girl I know.)

From there the book meanders rather like an unschooler's day, from writing to plans for reading a biography of Ben Franklin, to a science (or is it physical education?) lesson, to a first-day-of-homeschool picnic.

The book is intended, I think, as a gentle introduction to homeschooling. When Kandoo's mother announces that it's time to start learning the answers to her questions, and how to read and write, the little kangaroo is apprehensive. It seems a daunting task! Then her mother reminds her of the previous week's Bible memory verse: I can do everything through Him who gives me strength. (Phil. 4:13, NIV) So, she finds that learning is really not such an overwhelming task.

As a bonus, Kandoo makes a new friend at the homeschool picnic. It looks as if Kandoo's homeschool is off to a bouncing start!

One thing that I found disconcerting in reading this book was a certain disjointed feeling in the style. The book established Kandoo's personality nicely, with sound effects added at just the right intervals to make reading aloud fun. But then the story began to meander, as I mentioned above, and our little ones' attention wandered; and there was a niggling detail that bothered the girls... it appears that Kandoo gets her name at the beginning of the story. What did her parents call her up until then?

This is a sweet little book, however, and might be good to read together with a little one who is just beginning formal (or informal) lessons.
