Why didn't I think of this? Oh sure, I've always tried to teach my kids organizational skills as we walk through life, but I've never made a point of truly teaching Organization as part of our curriculum. Hello, it's such a vital life skill that I certainly should have!

Enter Debbie Williams and her young son, David, with their book Organized Kidz. Though it's not written as curriculum, its layout makes this the perfect "textbook" for a course in organization. The Williams team writes directly to the student, but in such a manner that even older students and adults can gain from the text.

I truly would suggest using this book as a unit of study, working your way through the chapters, only progressing as your children and you master each step. I really do mean "your children and you." While written to the child, the book assumes the parent is in on the process and prepared to lend a hand when needed, take part in the occasional family conference, foot the bill for a few (very few) necessary purchases, and actively participate in the decluttering and organization of the family home, vehicle, and schedule.

Right, the book is comprehensive in its scope. Rather than limiting its focus to a child's own room, it teaches that child to organize all aspects of his space and time, and helps him understand the importance of a whole family working together as a team. It begins with the tangible-decluttering and organizing first his own room and then other areas of the house and vehicles-and then moves to the intangibles of time management, referring to earlier projects to help kids see the correlation between the two.

The fact that Debbie Williams is a "professional organizing strategist" becomes apparent as you read the book. Its layout is excellently organized; each section, with its chapters, is logical and flows well into the next; and the lessons taught are pertinent and proven. The child who works his way through this program should truly become one Organized Kid.

Williams is a writer as well, and a homeschooler who obviously understands how to work with children. Chapters are not overly lengthy and the pages are sprinkled with quotes from famous people, "Did You Know?" questions and answers, suggestions straight from the younger of the two authors, and worksheets that help kids think through various processes. Every chapter also contains pages for the child to record his own chapter notes. And Williams doesn't forget vocabulary; she uses many of the common words associated with organization and takes time to explain them all.

The appendix provides links lists that take you to suppliers for storage solutions, providers of time management tools, and other helpful sites. It also makes suggestions for further reading for parents.

Finally, you'll find that Williams has offered a great incentive the homeschooling parent should definitely consider taking advantage of to help keep the young organizers motivated.
We'll be happy to post your stories and before and after pictures on our Organized Kidz website. Your stories will encourage other kids to become Awesome Organizers, too. Pass it on!

Organized Kidz is available in both paperback and ebook formats.
