Drama Team Sketchbook contains twelve scripts for "sketches" that illustrate, in modern terms, Bible stories such as Jesus' birth in Bethlehem, His temptation in the wilderness, His encounter with the woman at the well, Jairus' daughter, Mary and Martha, the raising of Lazarus, and more.

But in case you're imagining people dressed up like Bible characters, or a flannel-board storytelling, you're in for a surprise. You may begin with two people in a Laundromat, for example, or someone sitting at a desk talking into a telephone, or a couple of brothers getting ready for an important visitor... and then, wham, the Bible message shines through, not preachy but understated and thought-provoking.

...which is exactly what the author is aiming at. In a thoughtful introduction, she talks about how God has used storytelling to get His message across, and how drama is a means of telling stories, bringing the listeners in and relating conversation and events to their own lives. She illustrates the difference between skits and sketches and gives general advice on how to perform the included sketches for maximum impact.

The sketches may be used for free public performances provided that a copy of the book is purchased for each actor and the author is credited in the program or on a screen. They may be used for a paid performance if you contact the publisher to arrange for permission. The sketches themselves use a minimum of props (chair, table; two stools; a few cans and food boxes; a basket full of unfolded laundry and a bottle of water...just to name a few) and two to four characters. They are brief - all under ten minutes, and most under five -pithy, and designed to be presented in an understated style rather than with melodrama. Best of all, they leave you thinking.

This book would be a perfect tool for a homeschool drama group or a church group interested in using drama to tell stories from the Gospel, with its eternal themes expressed in modern (for the most part) settings.

If you'd like more information on putting together a drama team, writing scripts of your own, acting, directing, and putting on performances, you might check out Drama Team Handbook by the same author. (Please see related review.)

The stories are powerful. Of course, they have the power of the Gospel behind them.
