If you could actually attend a homeschool conference specifically devoted to speakers representing the various methods of homeschooling, you might get information similar to what you find in Homeschooling Methods. The book has contributions from a number of Christian homeschooling authors and speakers that deal with their special area of expertise. Douglas Wilson writes about classical homeschooling and Catherine Levinson about the Charlotte Mason method. Although the subtitle labels the book as advice on learning styles it should read advice on homeschooling styles. If you are looking for a book specifically about learning styles, look elsewhere.

Since each contributor has limited space, each chapter tends to be an overview, which includes some specific assistance on using the method. This is perfect for those exploring the various homeschooling methods, but those who have a homeschooling style preference will probably want to invest in a book specific to that style to get more in-depth information. For the most part, the contributions are well thought out and give excellent information that new homeschoolers will find useful no matter which method they use. The only section that I found lacking was the eclectic section. Maggie Hogan's chapter was more or less a day in the life, with general admonitions that are pertinent no matter which homeschooling style you choose. Diana Waring's chapter offered more with a look at the eight intelligences. There wasn't a whole lot of how-to in these chapters; it's definitely something you find more of in the other sections of the book.

In all, the book covers classical education, the principal approach, the traditional textbook method, the Charlotte Mason method, the unit study method, special needs homeschooling, car schooling, the eclectic method, unschooling, and whole heart learning.

Homeschooling Methods is a strongly Christian book edited by Paul and Gena Suarez of The Old Schoolhouse magazine. The contributors speak often of their religious faith and how that motivates and informs their homeschooling. For many Christian homeschoolers homeschooling is a lifestyle, and the contributors to this book make clear that their chosen method involves more than just academics. If you are still figuring out how homeschooling fits with your family, Homeschooling Methods can supply the basis for choosing a direction.
