Judy Wilcox has done a masterful job of putting together study guides for Zeezok Publishing's series of biographies of the great composers. While the guides are small, only thirty pages or so, they contain a wealth of information that add to the reading of the children's biographies. (Please see related reviews.)

The Robert Schumann and Mascot Ziff Study Guide starts off with a map of the major cities in Europe where Schumann either visited or lived, along with a table showing where the composer fits into music history. Then, for each chapter, there is a timeline of major events in the composer's life, reading comprehension questions, character qualities, and background details.

For the teacher's convenience, suggested answers to the reading comprehension questions are given, along with page numbers in the associated biography where the information can be found. The discussion of character qualities also gives page numbers along with supporting details for the author's identification of such qualities as leadership, attentiveness, sensitivity, generosity, and more. Finally, "Tidbits of Interest" includes details on people, places, things and events in the composer's life. This is where you read about Schumann's mental illness in more straightforward terms than you find in the sensitively written biography. I had my older children read the study guide themselves, as a part of the music study, while I chose which details to reveal to the younger.

A few illustrations taken from the biography appear on the pages, and the Study Guide finishes with two pages of endnotes giving sources for the information within. Recommended for music students, a study of music history and appreciation, or just plain study of European culture during the first part of the 19th Century.
