Let me first say that the illustrations done by Tammy Carter Bronson are wonderful! The sketches of the instruments are done beautifully. The Kaleidonotes are characters that are colorful and display friendly faces. The story begins as the characters (notes) are on their way to hear the symphony. Upon arrival they notice that the orchestra is in disarray. The conductor is nowhere to be found and it's up to the Kaleidonotes to help the orchestra get in order on stage so the show can go on. Set to rhyme, the story unfolds and, instrument by instrument, you learn the stage position of each. Instruments are broken down into categories - strings, woodwinds, brass and percussion. You learn the different characteristics of each instrument as well.

Of course, there is a happy ending when all instruments are finally in place and the conductor is found, thanks to the quick thinking of the Kaleidonotes!

Your child will be introduced to:
  • Identification of instruments
  • Their positions on stage
  • Musical notes
  • Musical scale A-G
  • Seven colors of the rainbow
  • Importance of teamwork
Intended for ages 5-9, this 32-page, colorful book, published by Bookaroos Publishing, Inc., is a nice way to establish a link between literacy and music education. The Kaleidonotes were designed to support the Music and Literacy Awareness Cooperative Program, a service project of Altrusa International, of Fayetteville, Arkansas.
