This is a different way to learn drawing. At least, it's different from any way I've seen. Author John Hastings has broken the skills required for drawing into much smaller "bites" than you'll probably see in any other drawing book, and his system works.

He prefaces his lessons with advice on how to use the book (And he doesn't consider his instructions to be hard-and-fast rules, which is interesting) and how to get organized and ready to draw. His supply suggestions are simple and he even points out that you can draw with a sticky note and whatever tool you have on hand. I really appreciate his flexibility!

He divides the core of the book into three parts. Part One helps you start to draw by opening your eyes to "the magic of seeing lines and shapes," teaching about using points of reference, and explaining how to build a drawing from the ground up. Sound intense? It's not. Truly, he breaks each step down into the smallest possible parts and then accompanies every suggestion with a helpful illustration.

In part two you move on to "Mastering the Building-Block Lines." This includes properly seeing and drawing straight lines, circular lines, and elliptical lines. While working on each of these, you will clearly see its importance in an overall drawing.

The first two parts are great and will lead to excellent drawing skills, but with part three Hastings truly completes this book. He first gives lessons in composition that are so foundational and easy to understand that you will make great strides in the quality of your composed picture. Then he takes you on a further study of various lines and how they interact.

Final pages contain a glossary, suggestions for further reading, and an index.
