Drawing Techniques provides a fun approach to teaching new art concepts. The paperback book is a generous 8 by 10 inches and has 32 pages filled with colorful images and step-by-step directions in how to create your own work of art. There are several different techniques used throughout the book: Stenciling, cross hatching, pastels, Manga, and layering are just a few. Drawing Techniques also uses a variety of mediums for making these projects; this allows children to get to know different mediums and practice various approaches with familiar mediums. The mediums used in the book are waxed crayons, oil pastels, and colored pencils.

The colorful illustrations allow the reader to see options and develop confidence to branch out on their own. You will find a list of needed tools and materials at the front of the book. For the most part all of these are lying around the house, so your supply cost is fairly low. The step-by-step directions can easily be read and understood by a child with strong reading skills. Each step is illustrated so the young artist has clear examples to follow. The end of the book offers patterns that the child can use to help them in their drawings; they simply trace the pattern and then follow the rest of the directions to create their artwork. For example, should they choose to do the pointillism exercise, they could trace the sunflower pattern onto their paper and then, using oil pastels, fill in the tracing with points of color.

This book is a great way to inspire creativity. Drawing Techniques gives a laid-back approach to different types of drawing and coloring without leaving the young artist feeling like a failure for not doing it exactly as the book says; there is room for imagination and learning. I would recommend it for a family that is looking for an easy way to introduce art, or even just for a child who enjoys either drawing or art and would like to learn other ways to enhance their creations.
