Divided into five sections, Ted Wade's book is the most thorough coverage of how to homeschool in one book I?ve ever found. It?s a big book, 543 pages long. Because there is so much information in this book, the author has provided a handy tour guide. There are seven tours listed through the book. Each is aimed at a particular reading audience from those just considering homeschooling to those homeschooling high schoolers. If you prefer you can read it cover to cover. Or pick and choose the sections that interest you.

First, Wade covers principles of home education. This section alone makes this book a welcome resource for the beginning homeschooler. Wade and other homeschool authors cover topics such as helping your child learn, inspiring motivation, techniques for teaching, and developing intelligence. Wade discusses topics in this section I have never seen presented in a homeschooling manual.

In the next section of the book titled "Areas of Learning", Wade covers the various curricular areas such as reading, science, and math. He also covers information about teaching preschoolers, high schoolers, special needs children and gifted children.

The third section titled "Theory Into Practice" offers us testimonials from several homeschooling families?how their family homeschools. There are also articles about organizing, self-discipline, selecting learning materials, and meeting family needs.

The Appendices' Resource Information section is an extensive list of resources and helps. You'll find yourself returning to this section over and over. There are 31 appendices, 11 of which are devoted to reviews of specific resources by curricular area. Three lists cover information by region for the United States, Canada and countries outside North America. Appendix H lists 57 ideas that work. You'll also find a typical curriculum, that lists topics and objectives for elementary and secondary studies. In the article "Operating the Home School" Wade reviews books about home education. Other important sections include "Testing Services", "Instructional Services", "High School Distance Education", and "Suppliers".

The final section of the book provides 17 different forms as well as a guide for using each form. You won't want to use all the forms, but you should find something you will find useful for organizing your record keeping or household.
