Learn to Play Guitar, an introduction to acoustic and electric guitar, is a wonderful book published by Usborne books. If you're familiar with Usborne books, then you'll know that the book is full of colorful illustrations, rich drawings and lots of diagrams and detailed instructions. This book, however, is not for the younger child, as many Usborne books are. This book would, I think, be written for a child in the middle school years on up through the adult years.

Not ever having played the guitar in my life, other than a very short couple of weeks about 10 years ago, I found this book very interesting, though all the drawings and details were a bit overwhelming at first. The book also goes into a lot of details about topics such as The Blues Scale, Two Blues Tunes, and the different types of guitar playing (such as jazz, heavy metal, folk music or reggae).

For the person who knows absolutely nothing about playing an instrument or reading music, this book would be overwhelming; I have played the piano since I was a little girl and it overwhelmed me. I wouldn't, give it to a child to learn on his own, or even to someone who is starting at "the very beginning", so to speak. However, for an adult who wants to learn on his or her own, without an instructor, and one who knows something about music and reading music, this book would be a good book to try.
