It's portraiture Usborne style! This internet-linked book in the Usborne Art Ideas series is written for the 9 - 12-year-old, where reading level is concerned, but would be enjoyed by a much broader range of ages. It presents the face as the focus in your art projects, giving basic instructions in a wide range of techniques using a variety of materials.

It starts with pencil portraits, discussing the face's basic shapes, explaining also about proportion and placement before moving on to shading. Next it introduces colored pencils and ways you can use them. Then it jumps off into unexpected territory like stylized faces and drawing on the computer. The book's purpose seems to be to introduce the reader to as many different ways of `drawing' faces as possible and it succeeds quite well. It's like an art buffet, giving you the opportunity to dabble in pencil portraits, pen & ink, pastels, paint, paper sculpture & collage, scratchboard, printing & stenciling . . . and the list goes on.

The instructions, considering all that Usborne packs into this 63-page book, are necessarily brief, yet clearly helpful, and the accompanying illustrations reflect Usborne's usual excellence. The book even contains a small gallery that provides more inspiration. Plus, as I said at first, it can guide you to helpful internet sites as an added bonus. This is an excellent choice for a child's first forays into portrait art.
