Book Image Adobe Illustrator 10.0 for PC
Adobe

Amazon.com
While Adobe Illustrator has traditionally been reserved for the print and prepress marketplace, recent versions have targeted a broader audience, including a growing contingent of new-school Web designers. With the latest incarnation of Illustrator, Adobe aims to please both print and prepress designers, as well as cutting-edge Web designer communities. If you're looking for a greater Web focus from your vector graphics program, look no further than Illustrator 10. For those concerned about Illustrator becoming too Web focused, don't fret. All of Illustrator's previously existing drawing and text tools remain intact. Version 10 also introduces improved tools for drawing lines, arcs, and grids. These new drawing tools will maximize your productivity and provide an easy way to create the shapes you want.

In addition to the new drawing tools, Adobe has jumped on the graphics symbol bandwagon by allowing users to save any text object or graphic object as a symbol. Once objects are saved in the Symbol palette, they can be reused infinitely, thus providing easier management of files and decreased file size. Users will fall in love with the simple drag-and-drop usability of the symbols, while the newly added Symbol Sprayer lets you easily add multiple instances of a symbol directly into the document.

Adobe has also undertaken the task of minimizing the monotony of tedious and repetitive design tasks. By taking advantage of Illustrator-supported scripting languages, users can easily automate repetitive tasks by writing scripts directly in Illustrator. Any of the three popular scripting languages--Visual Basic Script, JavaScript, or AppleScript--can be used. When creating a design, users can assign a text object or graphic object to a variable. These variables can then pull information from any ODBC-compliant database. With this type of power, users can easily create templates for documents such as Web pages or product catalogs.

In this latest version of Illustrator 10, Adobe has managed to enhance its existing drawing tools with powerful productivity aids. By focusing on important workflow, productivity, and database-connectivity features, Adobe has given the user more time to explore new creative possibilities. --Rich Ting

Book Image Adobe Photoshop 7.0 for MAC
Adobe

Amazon.com Review
Mixed-media professionals such as photographers, Web designers, and graphic designers will not be disappointed with Adobe's latest incarnation of Photoshop. While the major difference between this and earlier versions is that Photoshop 7.0 is Mac OS X compatible, this version also successfully addresses the issues of file management, easy photo retouching, and smarter output for the Web. In addition, new, improved tools such as painting and an enhanced brush palette allow Photoshop to build on its reputation as the leading tool for image manipulators. New-school designers of wireless applications will smile when they discover that Photoshop 7.0 finally offers support for WBMP-format graphics.

Photoshop 7.0's new file management system comes in the form of a Windows Explorer-like file browser that allows users to easily sort and locate their images within various projects. Users can now organize projects by name, date, resolution, and a number of additional parameters.

The enhanced brush palette allows users to create custom brushes and save them as a preset that can be accessed from the Tool options bar. Users can easily vary different aspects of the brush by changing the hue, opacity, or flow of the brushes for pastels, oils, and charcoal. Photoshop 7.0 also introduces a new Healing Brush and Patch Tool. With this tool, users can easily "heal" their images by removing scratches, blemishes, and other imperfections while also preserving shading, lighting, and texture attributes.

Adobe has taken great strides in revamping Photoshop 7.0 to be more Web-ready than ever before. With the help of its companion software, Image Ready, users can now easily create rollovers and complex navigation bars with selected state by using the new Rollovers palette. Additional Web-ready features include enhanced Web export functions that allow designers to preview images designed for PDAs and mobile phones in the WBMP format. Users can easily create a slide show of their images and post online using the new Web Gallery. For those concerned about posting their images online, they can secure their images with the new password protection feature before sharing them.

A long overdue spell checker has finally been introduced, with wicked multilingual spell-checking capabilities. A new search-and-replace feature allows users to search and replace across different layers in the same document.

While Photoshop 7.0 introduces an impressive array of features that allow photographers and Web and graphic designers to work more effectively with Web and wireless devices, Photoshop still remains the leading tool for anyone serious about digital imaging. No other software package provides users with the ability to create such high-quality images. --Rich Ting

Adobe

Amazon.com Review
Adobe Design Collection 6.0 represents a fantastic value for the money by bringing together award-winning, next-generation design and publishing applications for design professionals. This collection includes InDesign, Photoshop, Illustrator, and Acrobat.

Adobe Illustrator has traditionally been reserved for the print and prepress marketplace, but recent versions have targeted a broader audience, including a growing contingent of new-school Web designers. With the latest incarnation of Illustrator, Adobe aims to please both print and prepress designers, as well as cutting-edge Web designer communities. Illustrator manages to enhance its existing drawing tools with powerful productivity aids. And by focusing on important workflow, productivity, and database-connectivity features, Adobe has given the user more time to explore new creative possibilities.

With Photoshop, Adobe continues to come up with an awe-inspiring mix of great new features, productivity enhancements, and tweaks and treats. Version 7 is no exception. One of Photoshop's many strengths is the versatility of its tools, and this has been stretched to new limits. Filter previews are bigger, the liquify tool has been enhanced, brush parameters have been extended, and commonly used tool settings can be saved as presets. Photoshop continues to add more features for the Web developer as well as the professional designer. For example, the creation of rollovers is simpler, and a new "selected" rollover state takes some of the repetitive strain out of nav bar production. All in all, this is an upgrade guaranteed to keep Photoshop at the cutting edge of professional image editing.

InDesign is all about creative page layout. A high-end desktop publishing product, it is aimed squarely at professional designers who need maximum flexibility alongside strong document management and support for industry standards. Eye-catching features such as transparency and blending are combined with more mundane, but important, abilities such as table-of-contents creation and index generation, to make this a more complete and rounded product than earlier versions. Creativity in print has never been easier.

Acrobat is PDF-creation software from the people who first established the PDF standard. PDF (Portable Document Format) remains the best way to make documents that can be read by anyone on any platform. Installation is easy and features a function button that you can added to Office applications such as Word, Excel, and PowerPoint. When you have written a document in these programs, simply click the PDF button on the toolbar and it will guide you through saving it as a PDF. Anyone with Acrobat Reader, which is free and available for download from Adobe's Web site, can view the documents. These documents can also be uploaded to Internet sites or onto networks.

Adobe Design Collection 6.0 is a fantastic package that places award-winning print, design, and Web authoring applications into one affordable package. --Chris Ryan

Book Image Adobe Photoshop Elements 2.0

Amazon.com Review
For intermediate digital image enthusiasts who don't need Adobe Photoshop, Adobe's barer-bones Photoshop Elements 2.0 works atop the same engine and provides many of the same tools for a fraction of the price.

Elements' interface is less complex then Photoshop, packaging oft-used quick correction tools in easy-to-access locations. The program gears itself toward the novice user looking to learn more about digital image modification and enhancement. You can also enter keywords into a search field and Elements will offer up related walkthroughs and instructions.

Elements can input images from a variety of sources, including scanners and digital cameras. It's more powerful than the average program bundled with any of these devices, so you can make it your default image editor for either or both. Stills can also be snagged from a variety of video formats, including QuickTime, MPEG, AVI, and Windows Media. Before opening images, you can browse through their thumbnails, which include a preview of the image as well as its size and type.

Inputted images can be enhanced, distorted, corrected, or combined into panoramas through the PhotoMerge stitching tool. The new Selection Brush lets users simply paint over an item they would like to cut or copy. While it still takes a steady hand to select non-straight edges, it's easier than using the standard selection tools such as the rectangular marquee or the lasso. Elements works well as a file manager as well, its new batch processing feature allowing users to make changes to several images at once.

Output options are also expansive, including attaching photos to e-mail messages, printing images, or saving them in a smaller Web format and then uploading them to the Internet. Beyond these typical tools, Elements users can create image slideshows in PDF format that can be viewed on PDAs as well as other PCs.

While there are other image editing programs that sell for the same price, Photoshop Elements brings to the table much of the power of its bigger sibling while making it accessible for the average user. --J. Curtis

Amazon.com Review
Adobe Photoshop Elements 2.0 sits between the low-end PhotoDeluxe and the professional Photoshop 7.0, and is ideal for anyone with a serious interest in digital imaging. It offers particularly good handholding features for beginners.

With Photoshop Elements, Adobe takes the most widely used parts of Photoshop and tweaks the interface to make these features easier to use. The program is designed mainly for retouching digital photographs, but has a number of natural media brushes, too, so you can create your own images from scratch.

The key features of Elements revolve around the amount of assistance offered and the friendly interface. While there are many more tools available than in, say, PhotoDeluxe, the comprehensive Help system and the Recipe Palette work together to provide an easy entrance into common tasks. These include retouching images, preparing them as Web graphics, and sending pictures as e-mail attachments.

New additions to this version start as soon as you choose to open a graphic file. The file browser now shows thumbnails of all readable files and provides details of their types and sizes. To open the file, simply double-click a thumbnail.

The Palette Well is a box, set into the Shortcuts bar, that contains five separate, tabbed palettes, for options such as filters and layers. Click on any tab and the palette detaches to float over the work area; click again and it re-docks in the well.

Photoshop Elements now provides an image stitching tool called Photomerge, and a method for grabbing single frames from common video types, such as MPEG, AVI, WMV, and QuickTime. Improved features for creating Web images include the ability to create Web galleries of your photos and automated adjustments, which can be used to make photos suitable for Web transmission and display.

Photoshop Elements 2.0 is ideal for the enthusiastic amateur or base-level professional graphic artist who needs to work quickly and easily with photographic images. --Simon Williams

Book Image CorelDRAW Graphics Suite 11
Corel

Amazon.com Review
The CorelDRAW Graphics Suite combines three heavyweight graphics tools--CorelDRAW 11, Photo-Paint 11, and R.A.V.E. 2--which can be used individually or together. Now in version 11, the CorelDRAW Suite shows Corel still has plenty of ideas on how to improve the effectiveness and ease-of-use of these major applications.

For example, in CorelDRAW there are now new "three-point" tools for drawing rectangles, ellipses, and curves. With each, you click to fix the first point, stretch out to define an axis or baseline, and click again to complete the object. The new Polyline tool enables you to create lines and objects segment by segment, where each segment can be straight or curved. The Pen tool offers a quick way to create Bezier curves.

CorelDRAW 11 introduces Symbols to its repertoire, too, so you can save and reuse drawing elements in a clip-board-style library. Using symbols saves considerable file space, which can be particularly important when drawing Web graphics.

Corel Photo-Paint 11 is to bitmap editing what CorelDRAW is to vector drawing. In many ways a competitor to Adobe Photoshop, the new version of Photo-Paint includes more improvements for Web artists. You can now slice images into a number of small parts to aid quick downloads and create rollovers for buttons and image maps, so they appear differently when pointed to or clicked. The program also supports JPEG 2000 files, so you can save your images in this new high-compression format.

The Cut-out masking tool helps extract foreground images from picture files and create objects from them that you can incorporate into other pictures. While not as comprehensive as Corel's own stand-alone KnockOut product, it's a useful tool in its own right. Red-eye removal from portrait photos can be a nuisance, but the new red-eye removal tool replaces red pixels with their greyscale equivalents. Various other effects within Photo-Paint add to its usefulness--things like enhanced lens flare, improved bevels, and reworked image stitching for panoramic photos.

The third part of the suite is Corel R.A.V.E., a Macromedia Flash animation creator. This module now uses a very similar interface to CorelDRAW and incorporates most of the same tools. It also offers tools and effects specific to its animation role, such as tweening of text on a path and of the program's predefined library objects, Perfect Shapes. Export of graphics to Macromedia Flash has been improved and includes the ability to export text as text rather than curves, which saves considerable file space.

Overall, the latest version of Corel Graphics Suite shows the company has once again proven itself to be a real player in the graphic design space. --Simon Williams

Book Image Flash MX for MAC
Macromedia

Amazon.com Product Description
Macromedia Flash MX is a software solution for developing rich Internet content and applications. The video, multimedia, and application development features allow users to create user interfaces, online advertising, e-learning courses, and enterprise application front-ends. Flash MX has a customizable, intuitive user interface with such features as panel layout, accelerator keys, and publish settings.

Timeline enhancements such as folders for organizing and accessing layered content, improved cursor feedback, and the ability to resize, cut, and paste multiple frames make it easier to use. The Property Inspector shows only relevant, context-sensitive settings when you work with tools and objects, reducing the number of panels open at any time. Select multiple objects and use the Distribute to Layers command to automatically distribute the objects to their respective layers. The new layers will be named based on the content selected.

New quick-start templates allow you to create professional-looking presentations, photo albums, advertisements, and e-learning content. Other new features include video support for any standard video file supported by QuickTime or Windows Media Player, Color Mixer enhancements, a Free Transform tool, and pixel-level snapping control. Flash MX also features a customizable ActionScript editing environment with customizable text display properties, syntax coloring, and toolbox panel content.

Book Image Flash MX for PC
Macromedia

Amazon.com Review
Since Macromedia launched Flash in 1996, it has grown into the de facto standard for development and delivery of high-impact, visually rich, interactive Web content. Flash MX promises a similar generational shift to the one experienced when Flash 5's enhanced ActionScript introduced an unprecedented degree of interactivity to the Web.

The most exciting new features in this version are those aimed at e-content developers and programmers. Integration with application servers such as ColdFusion MX and Microsoft's .NET and Internet protocols like HTML, WebTV, and WAP make it possible to deliver Flash content to a range of platforms--from PCs to PlayStations to mobile phones.

But Flash MX also offers plenty to those who aren't part of a large team of designers and programmers developing corporate sites. Novice users can take advantage of a range of prebuilt, customizable components, including scroll bars, buttons, list and combo boxes, and QuickStart templates for presentations, photo albums, ads, and more, making it possible to achieve great results quickly.

The Flash MX interface is now consistent with Dreamweaver and Fireworks. Nested layer folders and improved cursor feedback for frame adjustment make the timeline more manageable, and the context-sensitive properties panel and collapsing, dockable panels reduce screen clutter considerably. Vector drawing tools, one of Flash's weaknesses, have been largely overlooked, but there is a new Free Transform tool, which combines rotate, scale, and skew options. Video, another Flash weak spot, has fared much better with the inclusion of the Sorensen Spark video codec. Users can import a variety of formats, including MPEG, DV, and QuickTime. In addition, users can animate and script AVI and video clip objects in the same way as bit maps, even using them on a mask layer.

Flash MX is backwards-compatible with version 5 (meaning users can publish version 5 SWF files, although MX SWF files require the MX player), removing the only argument for not upgrading. Those not yet convinced of the merits of Flash need only look around. --Ken McMahon

Book Image FreeHand 10.0 for MAC
Macromedia

Amazon.com Review
Macromedia is certainly one of the more technologically aggressive of the major software publishers, and now they are one of the first of the big boys (if not the first) to deliver a mainstream application fully compatible with Apple's new operating system, Mac OS X.

Freehand 10 includes numerous new features in three areas: new illustration tools, improved productivity, and multiple output options such as PDF, HTML, and Flash. Freehand 10 also supports the IPTC header file information for services that take advantage of such information, such as Knight Ridder and the Associated Press.

Illustrators will love "true contour gradients," a new feature that helps create the most realistic shading we've seen in a 2-D illustration program. Create gradients of irregular shapes, control the amount of shading at any point, and use multicolor gradients.

Freehand's improved pen tool now looks and behaves exactly the same as it does in Flash and Fireworks. In fact, the whole Freehand interface now looks, feels, and behaves just like other Macromedia products, while still managing to look like whatever platform it's running on. For example, Freehand under Mac OS 9 looks like a classic Mac app, but the same app takes on the Aqua interface when running under OS X.

Freehand 10 targets users who create material for print and the Web. Flash export, in the form of SWF files, has been improved, and conversely, a designer can now import Flash actions and assign them to objects in Freehand. Also, Freehand now has a Flash runtime engine complete with controller panel, so that Flash actions and files destined for SWF export can now be tested within Freehand.

For those who create multiple-page documents, Freehand's Master Pages can be used to manage a 32,000-page document, sharing templates and page attributes while retaining the ability to edit master pages at any time. Child pages update dynamically when a master page is changed.

For Mac OS X users, launching a major app like Freehand without first starting up the Classic environment is a real thrill. The native OS X interface is a nice complement to Freehand, and it makes us anxious to see other Macromedia products running under X. Freehand 10 is an important upgrade for existing users, and for new ones, numerous new features make it easier to learn than ever. --Mike Caputo

Macromedia

Amazon.com Product Description
FreeHand 10 offers graphic designers powerful productivity features, including master pages, the new Macromedia user interface, and sophisticated vector-based illustration tools. You can enhance your project workflow by creating a document once, then publishing it across multiple media, including print, the Web, and beyond. Version 10 of FreeHand offers a rich collection of previewable presets that designers can use to achieve results right out of the box.

True Contour Gradients allows you to create multicolor gradients that follow the contour of an outlining path. It also enables you to create visual effects with stunning realism, and to illustrate with much less effort. You can also easily integrate multiple Macromedia Web publishing products into your existing workflow with the Macromedia user interface. Its immediate accessibility makes the authoring process more intuitive to current users and more approachable to new users.

IPTC Header File Support enables cross-media publishing. FreeHand 10 lets you preserve International Press Telecommunications Council (IPTC) information in files that will be used by the news media. IPTC-aware third-party applications can access IPTC header information, such as copyrights, credits, captions, search words, and other data used to catalog image files.

FreeHand now offers Web-standard page sizes. Create or convert to standard Web page sizes easily for consistent multipublishing results. With the Macromedia Flash Navigation Panel you can test your Macromedia Flash movies within FreeHand before you export them to Macromedia Flash. The resizable, modeless navigation panel streamlines the functions of the URL Editor and Set Note Xtra extensions by letting you apply Internet links and Macromedia Flash actions to graphics and text from within FreeHand 10.

Amazon.co.uk Studio MX is the ideal bundle for professional Web designers, bringing together Dreamweaver MX for page design, Flash MX for animation and interactivity, and Fireworks MX for editing and optimizing graphics. Users also receive FreeHand 10, a full-featured vector image editor, and ColdFusion MX for dynamic Web applications. As for the quality of the individual products, Macromedia proves yet again why the company continues to earn the highest praise in its field of expertise. Dreamweaver MX is a visual Web editor that generates highly compatible code while also including useful site-management features. Flash MX is the de facto standard for Web animation, containing rich multimedia content in remarkably compact files. Fireworks is a great tool for putting the finishing touches on existing graphics, adding text effects or other elements, and optimizing the results for Web display. These three are the core Studio MX products, and the suite offers excellent value for these alone. Integration between the individual products is generally very good. It begins with the interface, which uses common elements such as dockable, collapsible panels and a dynamic property inspector, so that you can switch comfortably between products. On a technical level, the key feature is roundtrip support. You can embed Fireworks graphics and Flash movies in Dreamweaver pages without losing any information, letting you later reopen an element in its original application with all its features intact. The MX range differs from earlier Macromedia products by targeting application development as well as design. The user will need to build on a Web application server, such as the bundled ColdFusion MX or another supported platform, including ASP, ASP.NET, PHP, or any Java Enterprise Edition server. You can connect to databases through JDBC, OLE DB, or .NET data providers, depending on the server platform you're using. Dreamweaver MX is more developer-friendly than previous versions, with an enhanced code editor incorporating many of the features of HomeSite, Macromedia's code-centric Web page designer. Although ColdFusion MX has its own tag language (ColdFusion Markup Language), it generates Java code that can be deployed on any of the leading Java application servers. This also enables Java developers to extend ColdFusion with custom tags and components. In effect, the combination of Dreamweaver and ColdFusion provides an easy path into dynamic, Java-based Web development. As an alternative to ColdFusion, support for Microsoft .NET is a little less comprehensive, but still good, and includes visual designers for the key ASP.NET server-side controls. Application development is not just a matter of server-side scripting. Flash MX also has potential as a rich client, with an interface driven by embedded JavaScript. Through a technology called Flash Remoting, Flash MX offers support for Web services. The Studio bundle makes it relatively easy to set up ColdFusion to supply these services and for Flash to consume them. While it may seem strange to think of Flash as a rich client moving beyond the Web page, it does make some sense when you consider that it is cross-platform and very widely deployed. In addition, ColdFusion itself can consume Web services hosted on other platforms. Taking everything together, Studio MX is an essential development tool for ColdFusion, as well as a great bundle for any Web designer. --Tim Anderson

The staff at EHO try very hard to answer all our mail. We have had many of our responses to email returned as undeliverable. We also delete unread a great deal of spam. If your email message header sounds like it is spam, it will be deleted. "You Should See This!" or "Have I got something great for you" are examples of subject lines that would be deleted unread. If you use 'EHO' in the subject line it will not be deleted unread. If you have not received an answer to your question, please resend your email. We usually have a delay of 1 to 2 weeks in answering email because of the number of requests we get. Those wishing to request links to our site should read our linking page before writing us. All our resources are posted online. We do not mail information to postal addresses.
